Chapter Fifteen

I spent most of my time with Cait, although she had her own duties to attend to and I did not want to distract her during these times. The community was welcoming and never made me feel like I was imposing on their hospitality, but I still felt like an outsider and often chose to spend my time watching the activities of the Isle from a distance. It was during one of these times that Sutha came to find me. I had seen little of her since the visit to the flint towers; her time was often taken up with her responsibilities to the Isle, and her mornings were spent with Kade. Despite the many thoughts she must have been juggling, she had a manner that made you feel like you were the centre of her attention whenever you were around her.

She smiled at me as she curled her legs and gently sat beside me. She raised an eyebrow at the straw dolly I was struggling to make, knowing it had been prompted by the memory she had shown me of my mother’s teaching.

‘I need a little practice,’ I explained as I held up the partially completed, slightly rotated box shape.

‘Yes, well, if you will pick one of the most complicated patterns…’ she gently mocked. ‘And it looks fine to me.’

I continued feeding the dampened stalks of reed through the loops of the widening cage, content to let her watch me work. ‘It keeps my mind busy.’

She laughed quietly. ‘Indeed. I hear that you have been causing quite a commotion in lessons.’

I avoided looking up. ‘Sorry about the crystal.’

She dismissed my concern with a flick of her hand. ‘I think the Isle will be talking about that for quite some time. Although, I have to admit that I’m more pleased with Veeta skipping around the island like a young maiden. I believe you were meant to heal her neck, not her chronically aching joints.’

‘The energy from the flint helped.’

She harrumphed. ‘You sell yourself cheaply. Drey has given you the minimum of training, and still you accomplish these feats with ease.’

I stopped weaving and placed the dolly on my lap. ‘I am happy here. I would spend the time to complete my studies here, if I could.’

‘And we would be honoured to have you.’

The unspoken words hung suspended in the silence between us, and I felt the weight of my unknown future weighing heavily on my shoulders. After a while Sutha sighed, accepting that I was unwilling to proceed with the conversation.

‘And yet, that future is not for you.’

I nodded. ‘The king owns my future.’

‘And Kade?’

I thought for a couple of heartbeats, before nodding again. ‘And Kade. But I can’t shake the feeling that I have unfinished business with Villermir. I can’t leave the Empathy Crystal with him.’

Sutha inhaled deeply before releasing the breath as a long sigh. ‘When you first arrived on the island, I gave you three titles. Dragonslayer from your father’s bloodlines. Empath from your mother’s. And Moon Warrior.
